Arkansas River Compact Administration to meet Dec. 11

Compact commissioners from Kansas and Colorado who make up the Arkansas River Compact Administration will meet at 8:30 a.m., MST , Dec. 11, at the Lamar Community Building, 610 South Sixth Street, in Lamar, Colo.

The group will discuss John Martin Reservoir operations, water delivery and the status of a transit-loss study below the reservoir. They also will hear reports from federal and state agencies.

The engineering, operations and administrative/legal committees will meet at 2 p.m. MST, Dec. 10, at the Prowers County Annex, 1001 South Main Street, in Lamar Those meetings will continue until they are complete.

The public is welcome to attend the meetings. Individuals who plan to attend and who require special accommodation should contact Stephanie Gonzalez at 719-734-5367 at least five days before the meetings.

David Barfield, chief engineer of the Kansas Department of Agriculture's division of water resources, David Brenn of Garden City and Randy Hayzlett of Lakin serve as Kansas' three compact commissioners.

The Kansas-Colorado Arkansas River Compact was negotiated in 1948 between the states with participation from the federal government. Its purposes are to equitably apportion the waters of the Arkansas River and the benefits arising from John Martin Reservoir, to settle existing disputes and to remove causes for future controversy.
