Sorghum beginning to head out

Showers remained light and scattered during the week ending July 29, and producers averaged 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, July 30.

Spraying and ground preparations for fall planting were the primary activities. Topsoil moisture was rated 7 percent very short, 37 percent short, 54 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 1 percent very short, 25 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus.

Ninety-eight percent of the corn has silked, compared to 97 percent last year and 94 percent for the five-year average. Forty-six percent is in the dough stage, compared to 41 percent last year and 38 percent for the five-year average. Eight percent has dented, one point ahead of last year but the same as the five-year average. corn condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 58 percent good, and 13 percent excellent.

Seventy-two percent of the soybeans have bloomed, compared to 86 percent last year and 76 percent for the five-year average. Thirty- four percent is setting pods, compared to 40 percent last year and 35 percent for the five-year average. Soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 12 percent excellent.

Twenty-one percent of the sorghum has headed, compared to 34 percent for both last year and the five-year average. One percent is coloring, compared to 2 percent last year and 3 percent for the five-year average. sorghum condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 66 percent good, and 8 percent excellent.

Forty-eight percent of the third cutting alfalfa has been harvested, compared to 55 percent last year and 53 percent for the five-year average. Thirty-nine percent of the sunflowers have bloomed, compared to 22 percent last year and 27 percent for the five-year average. Sunflower condition was rated 4 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Twenty-five percent of the cotton is setting bolls, compared to 56 percent last year and 32 percent for the five-year average. cotton condition was rated 20 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 20 percent excellent.

Range and pasture conditions were rated 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated 1 percent very short, 13 percent short, 85 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 16 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were rated 8 percent short, 90 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus.
