Pre-plant wheat school

Kansas

As fall fast approaches, decisions are being made that will affect the soon to be sown 2008 wheat crop. The decisions may range from what wheat variety to plant and how much nitrogen to apply to the best management practices for no-till. Other management decisions concerning disease and insects of wheat also start before the farmer plants.

Therefore, in order to provide farmers with information on these and other topics relevant to wheat production a pre-plant wheat school is being conducted by the Ellis County Extension Office. Extension specialists Dale Leikam will discuss fertility for conventional and no-till wheat, Eric DeWolf will present the latest information on wheat diseases and prevention. Brian Olson will present information on no-till wheat production and weed control options and discuss Hessian fly management, and Jim Shroyer will discuss wheat variety selection.

The school will be held on Aug. 9 at the Ellis County meeting room located at 601 Main Street, Hays. The program will start at 5:30 p.m., and conclude around 9 or 9:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend but pre-registration is requested by Aug. 6. A meal will be provided courtesy of Bieker Insurance Agency and Ellis County Extension, to register call 785-628-9430. A minimum of 10 people pre-registered is needed in order to have the program.
