Pork producers make donation to ensure future of Ellsworth CCIowa A generous donation from the Iowa Pork Producers Association will help ensure that Ellsworth Community College students can continue to prepare for a career in pork production. IPPA donated $60,000 to the Ellsworth Swine Management Program July 3 and President Scott Tapper, a producer from Webster City, says the donation was not a difficult decision to make. "We want to invest in the future of our industry," Tapper said. "We've made a commitment to our youth programs and this donation is just part of that effort. We're glad we can help out." Mike Faga, associate professor of swine management at the Iowa Falls school, says the money will help ensure that Ellsworth can continue offering the program on a full-time basis for the next two years. "Without the support and cooperation of people in the [pork] industry and organizations such as the Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Select Farms and others, it wouldn't be possible for these programs to survive," Faga said. "Otherwise, the college was looking at scaling back the program to half time." The Swine Management Program was suspended when Faga joined Ellsworth three years ago and he has slowly helped rebuild the program. Students can earn a swine management certificate for one semester of work, a swine management diploma for a full year of study and an associate's degree for two years of swine management and general studies class work. Those students earn an Ag Science Transfer degree and usually finish their four-year degrees at Iowa State University or other institutions. The IPPA donation will be used for program development, new innovations for students to learn on, and for recruiting and attracting new students. The Ellsworth Swine Management Program is one of the few in the country and it has been recognized with numerous awards for being one of the nation's top vocational programs. Date: 8/2/07
