Don Worster to speak at KRC summer board meeting
Kansas The Kansas Rural Center announces Don Worster as the speaker for the annual summer board meeting on August 18, at the Smoky Hill Bison Company, 2660 East Hobbs Creek Road, Assaria. Worster's presentation: "Kansas Water: Past, Present and Future" is open to the public at 4 p.m. Currently, Worster holds the Hall Distinguished Professorship Chair in American History at the University of Kansas. He is particularly interested in environmental history and the history of the American West. Worster has authored numerous books including the Bancroft award winning "Dust Bowl"; Pulitzer Prize nominated "Rivers of Empire," and "A River Running West: the Life of John Wesley Powell," a Byron Caldwell Smith award winner. Following Worster's presentation, a bison meatloaf dinner is at 5:30 p.m., with a tour to the bison herd at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend Worster's address, dinner and the bison herd tour. The cost to attend is $25 per person. Prior to Worster's address, the KRC board will hold a business meeting from 1 to 3 p.m. The Smoky Hill Bison Company is owned and operated by Verne and Linda Hubalek. After purchasing the farm in the mid-90s, the Hubaleks worked with KRC's Clean Water Farms Project to convert the cropland to grass, install an alternative watering system and establish a management intensive grazing system. The couple now utilizes the MIG system with the bison herd, rotating them to a new pasture every few days. The Hubaleks are steadfast in raising an all-natural bison herd and providing it for sale. "Our commitment to agricultural sustainability is being accomplished by selling bison meat and related buffalo products through our website," Linda said. By adding the Visitors Center, and agri-tourism activities like the annual maze and pumpkin patch Linda said they have doubled the farm's income. "This commitment would be difficult to fulfill if using traditional commodity crops and methods on our small, 80 acre farm," she said. For more information on the Smoky Hill Bison Company, for directions to the farm or to purchase bison products, see their website at www.bisonfarm.com.
