Wray range school set for Sept. 11, 13Colorado Ranchers who want to learn more about protecting and preserving the rangeland resource on their ranches will have the opportunity to attend one of four range schools to be held in Eastern Colorado in September. Locations for the two Northeast Colorado schools will be: --Wray, Sept. 11, Fourth and Main Street Grille; and --Greeley, Sept. 13, Island Grove Park, 4-H Building. Pre-registration is $25 if postmarked by Sept. 4. Late and on-site registration is $50. Information and registration forms for each school can be obtained on-line. Go to the Colorado Section of the Society for Range Management website at www.cssrm.org. Those interested in attending the school in Wray should make their checks payable to the Yuma County Conservation District or YCCD and mail or bring them to 247 North Clay in Wray, CO 80758. Topics to be covered in each course include 1) why stewardship pays, 2) how plants grow and respond to grazing, 3) understanding and applying ecological site descriptions, 4) managing rangeland for desired outcomes, and 5) practical applications of range management, livestock nutrition, and monitoring. In addition, selected ranchers will give their perspective on range management. The morning and first half of the afternoon will be spent inside discussing the various topics. During the last half of the afternoon attendees will go to the field to identify the conditions discussed during the morning. Instructors will be John Valentine, Colorado State Land Board; Roy Roath, CSU Cooperative Extension; Floyd Reed, USFS (Retired); and local USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service rangeland management specialists. Sponsors of the schools are the Colorado Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative Committee, Colorado Section SRM, Yuma County Conservation District and NRCS. 8/27/07
