West Plains regional sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 5,020 head Aug. 21, compared to 3,950 head last week and 3,450 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, feeders under 500 pounds sold $1 to $3 higher, especially on calves showing signs of the past few weeks of extreme heat, 500- to 600-pound feeders were unevenly steady, and feeders over 600 pounds sold $2 to $4 higher. Demand was best on feeders that had already suffered from the effects of the heat and would lose the least if the dry weather and high temperatures continue. Locally much of the area missed rains that totaled near a foot just a couple hours away. Many pastures are barren and as a result auction receipts have been quite large the last few weeks. Auction receipts were made up of 51% steers, 37% heifers, 5% Holstein steers, and 7% bulls. Feeders over 600 pounds made up near 43% of the total offerings.
