UNL names director of Institutional Animal Care Program, one he
Nebraska Don Beermann has been named director of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Institutional Animal Care Program. Beermann is leaving his post as head of UNL's Department of Animal Science, which he held for eight years. The Institutional Animal Care Program, which is part of the university's Office of Research, provides direction and leadership for the care and welfare of animals in research and teaching within the university and administers the university's program for laboratory animal use and housing. Beermann also will coordinate the Agricultural Research Division's One Health Initiative, which involves developing research and educational opportunities for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and its collaborators that bridge human and animal health. Beermann assumed both positions Aug. 1. John Owens, Harlan vice chancellor of the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, said Beermann is well-suited for his new responsibilities. "This appointment capitalizes on Dr. Beermann's background as an animal science administrator, researcher and educator and his ongoing interest in relating human and animal physiology." The animal science department had some key successes under Beermann's leadership, Owens added. The department initiated two new undergraduate options--equine science and companion animals--and also launched a joint degree in food technology for companion animals. The department also was a partner in the cooperative veterinary education program between UNL and Iowa State University. Kimberly Andrews Espy, associate vice chancellor for research, said Beermann would be a welcome addition to the Office of Research. "We are pleased that Dr. Beermann will join the Office of Research," she said. "He brings extensive administrative experience, an understanding of animal care, teaching and facility issues, and excellence in research that will be an asset in our efforts to continue to enhance our Institutional Animal Care Program for university faculty, staff and students." Sheila Scheideler, poultry science professor, has been named interim head of the animal science department while a national search is conducted for a permanent head.
