Sorghum field day planned at Byron

Nebraska

Sorghum farmers are invited to attend the 2007 Sorghum Hybrid Test Plot Field Day to be held Sept. 5 at the Loren and Ryan Bohling farm at Byron, Neb. The event starts at 5 p.m., with a tour of the hybrid test plot, which is located three miles east of Byron on the south side of Hwy. 8. The hybrid plot is sponsored annually by the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Producers Association, UNL Cooperative Extension, the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board, participating seed companies, and agri business.

"We'll have representatives from the commercial seed companies on hand to discuss their plot entries," said James Vorderstrasse, NeGSPA director and plot coordinator. "Farmers will be able to see and compare hybrids for themselves."

A barbecue dinner, featuring sorghum brownies for dessert, will be served at 7 p.m. The evening program will include an address by a National Sorghum Producers representative to discuss the 2007 farm bill and provisions of particular importance to sorghum producers' bottom line. They will also discuss the proposed national sorghum check-off and the industry's focus for the future.

"NSP has worked many, long hours in Washington toward shaping a farm bill that will work for sorghum producers," added Vorderstrasse. "Maintaining direct payments is sorghum's top priority."

The event will also include a yield guessing contest and door prizes.

Directions: Three miles east of Byron on the south side of Hwy. 8. The plot is clearly marked with a 4- by 8-foot NeGSPA sign.
