Heat wave continuesMissouri A heat wave continued for the second week in a row, baking most of the state with high temperatures of 100 degrees and above during the week ending Aug. 19, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Missouri Field Office, Aug. 20. Most of the state received light to moderate rainfall, but not enough to prevent continued deterioration in row crops, pasture, and soil moisture. Topsoil moisture at the state level is rated 45 percent very short, 40 percent short, and 15 percent adequate. Corn in dough stage is 92 percent, about 1 week behind last year but the same as the five-year average. Sixty-five percent is dented, 1 week behind last year and 3 days behind the 71 percent average. Fourteen percent of the crop is mature, with harvest starting in the southeast district. The condition rating is 10 percent very poor, 20 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 35 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Seventy-three percent of the soybean crop is setting pods, 5 days behind last year and slightly behind the five-year average of 75 percent. Three percent is turning color. Soybean condition is rated 10 percent very poor, 20 percent poor, 40 percent fair, and 30 percent good. Sorghum heading is at 87 percent, 13 days behind last year and 5 days behind normal. Forty percent is turning color, 1 week behind last year and marginally behind average. Four percent is mature. Sorghum condition is rated 2 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 45 percent fair, 35 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Rice heading is at 92 percent, nearly even with last year but 1 week ahead of normal. Rice condition is rated 2 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 20 percent excellent. Cotton setting bolls is at 94 percent, slightly behind last year and normal. Seventeen percent of bolls are opening, 6 days ahead of last year and 9 days ahead of average. Cotton condition is rated 10 percent very poor, 25 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 30 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. The third cutting of alfalfa is 71 percent complete, 2 weeks behind last year and 5 days behind average. Pasture condition is rated 30 percent very poor, 25 percent poor, 35 percent fair, and 10 percent good. Date: 8/23/07
