Superior Livestock holds the largest video auction in history

Texas

The nation's leader in marketing load lots of cattle, Superior Livestock Auction has successfully held the largest livestock auction ever conducted. The six day video auction was held at the Sheraton Resort and Conference Center in Steamboat Springs, Colo., and broadcast live from the Superior Livestock Auction studio in Fort Worth, Texas.

This year's record number of over 320,000 head exceeded the previous record by almost 50,000 head sold by Superior Livestock in 2005.

"We are extremely proud and humbled by the amount of confidence that cattlemen from 27 states have placed in us to market their livestock during this auction" said Richard Stober, general manager with Superior Livestock Auction. "This is a huge tribute to Superior Livestock and all of our more than 200 area representatives that assembled these cattle."

The six day auction was comprised of more than 2,700 lots and were purchased by many of the more than 4,500 registered buyers at Superior Livestock. The entire sale was broadcast live over RFD-TV which reaches almost 30 million households throughout rural America via Dish Network, DirecTV and the Internet.

"Some 20 years ago when Superior Livestock Auction was started by Jim Odle and the late Buddy Jeffers, the goal was to sell 300,000 head per year. Now we sell that many in a week," said Jim Kelley, business manager with Superior Livestock Auction. "With the use of television and Internet, today's technology has allowed us to reach more buyers and develop a national market for our consignors' cattle not just a regional or local market."

The 320,000 head was a combination of calves, yearlings and bred stock from coast to coast. Over 75 percent of these consignments were enrolled in one of Superior's preconditioning VAC programs. These programs provide buyers with increased confidence when it comes to animal health concerns and provides sellers with additional premiums for good management practices. Almost 90,000 head were sold as certified natural (no drugs, hormones or antibiotics) and 75,000 head were sold as Source and Age Verified by the USDA using electronic RFID tags.

Superior Livestock has also just announced a strategic alliance with Pfizer Animal Health. With this new program Pfizer and Superior have teamed up to develop new programs and protocols with the goal of ensuring buyer confidence and providing premiums for the consignor.

"This was a great way to start our summer sale season and we want to thank our many consignors from across the country for entrusting us with the job of marketing their cattle," said Stober. "This is a big responsibility and not one we take lightly at Superior Livestock."

Video and Internet auctions have changed the way livestock are marketed today throughout the country just as cell phones and e-mail have changed the way we communicate.
