Rain welcomed across state

Iowa

Showers early during the week ending Aug. 12, brought needed moisture to the state, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, Aug. 13.

Select areas saw damaging winds along with the rain. The week concluded with above normal temperatures and high humidity. Spraying for soybean aphids continues, as population counts are high. A small number of counties are experiencing soybean sudden death syndrome.

There were 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 4.1 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 5 percent very short, 15 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus across the State. Subsoil moisture rated 8 percent very short, 24 percent short, 65 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus.

Oats harvested for grain are at 99 percent, 2 percentage points ahead of last year and one percentage point ahead of the five-year average. Corn in milk stage is at 87 percent, equal to last year, but 6 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Corn in dough stage is at 52 percent, equal to last year, but 9 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Corn in dent stage is at 14 percent, 1 percentage point ahead of last year and 6 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Corn condition is rated at 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 18 percent excellent. Eighty-nine percent of soybeans are setting pods, 2 percentage points behind last year, but 1 percentage point ahead of the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated at 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 19 percent excellent. The second cutting of alfalfa is virtually complete. The third cutting of alfalfa is 34 percent complete, well behind last year's 46 percent and 4 percentage points behind the five-year average. All hay condition is 6 percent very poor, 20 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 38 percent good, and 5 percent excellent.

Pasture condition rated 10 percent very poor, 19 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 32 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. High heat and humidity has caused stress on livestock and pastures.
