Morgan wins Junior Merit AwardColorado Roger Morgan, Nicole Starr and Margeaux Firestine were awarded National Junior Merit Award scholarships on July 13 at the 2007 Junior National Hereford Expo in Denver. The junior merit scholarships recognize outstanding members of the National Junior Hereford Association. The scholarship program is designed to encourage individual and cooperative effort, enthusiasm, excellence, leadership and achievement among youth in order to develop reputable breeders for the good of the Hereford business and beef industry. Candidates compete for three college scholarships provided by the Hereford Youth Foundation of America. First place went to Roger Morgan, Burwell, Neb. He received $1,000, plus a trip to any Hereford operation in the continental U.S., made possible by long-time sponsor, Harding and Harding Insurance. He earned the second place award in last year's National Junior Merit competition. Morgan started showing Herefords at age four and has been active since. He and his brother are partners in a 30-head Hereford operation. He was recently elected vice president of the NJHA board. He has also been a director and is currently vice president of the Nebraska Junior Hereford Association. Morgan was also very involved in 4-H and FFA. He served in various leadership roles in his 4-H club including president. In FFA, he earned his State and American Farmer degrees. He received his associate's of arts degree from Northeast Community College, Norfolk, Neb., and was named the 2007 outstanding livestock judging team member. He is now attending Northwest Missouri State University majoring in agriculture business. He plans to work in the animal electronic identification industry and continue raising Herefords. Nicole Starr, Manawa, Wis., was awarded the second-place $750 scholarship. This is her 11th JNHE. She is reporter on the NJHA board and was a director in 2005-06. She is also active in the Wisconsin Junior Hereford Association where she has served as president, vice president, secretary, reporter and director. Starr has also been active in FFA and 4-H. She is a sophomore at Michigan State University majoring in animal science and marketing. After graduation, she plans to work as a pharmaceutical sales representative and raise Hereford cattle. Margeaux Firestine, Womelsdorf, Pa., was the 2003 National Polled Hereford Queen. She was also the 2002 Pennsylvania Junior Hereford Association queen and served as director and secretary/treasurer of the organization. Firestine was also active in 4-H, FFA and the local Lutheran church. She enjoys helping people and donated a Hereford heifer to an inner city Philadelphia resident who is a member of PJHA. Firestine is a senior at Towson University, Towson, Md., majoring in biology. She plans to be a veterinarian to help animals and ensure a safe food supply. The NJHA is one of the most active junior programs in the country with approximately 3,000 members. The NJHA's mission is to create and promote enthusiasm for the breed while providing opportunities through leadership, education and teamwork.
