Iowa plays host to ProBeef '07 International Conference

Iowa

Ames is the site for the ProBeef '07 International Conference: A Global View of the Ethanol Industry and Beef Cattle Production. Vigortone Ag Products is teaming up with Iowa State University Extension and the Iowa Beef Center to host the Sept. 5-7 conference for beef producers, nutritionists, and biorenewable and cattle industry professionals.

The traveling conference, held in Brazil last year, features experts from Brazil and the United Kingdom speaking about the future of beef and biofuels internationally.

In addition to the international speakers on the international aspect of ethanol and beef, first day speakers from Iowa State University include Bruce Babcock, professor of economics and the director of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development, and Robert Brown, of ISU's Office of Biorenewables Programs.

Babcock will overview the current status and trends in the U.S. ethanol industry and Brown will give a perspective of cellulosic ethanol and its potential as an ethanol feedstock. The outlook for corn and cattle will also be discussed.

The second day will concentrate on the U.S. beef and feed industry, its status and current knowledge on the use of ethanol products for beef cattle. Nationally recognized experts in beef nutrition will discuss feeding ethanol co-products in beef diets and the effects on the cost and quality of beef.

These experts include John Newbold of Provimi, Galen Erickson and Rick Rasby of the University of Nebraska, Allen Trenkle of Iowa State University, Robbi Pritchard of South Dakota State University and Fred Owens of DuPont.

The final day will include tours of Lincolnway Energy, a local feedlot and a Biomass Energy Conversion Center facility.

The conference will be held at the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University campus, Sept. 5-7, 2007. Registration for this conference is $139 before Aug. 15. After this date the cost of registration will be $179.

Vigortone Ag Products is the main sponsor of this event. Iowa State University Extension and the Iowa Beef Center are contributing sponsors.
