Above average moisture finally comesColorado During the week ending Aug. 12, Colorado enjoyed some much needed moisture, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office, Aug. 13. Most areas reported precipitation above average for the first time in several weeks. Temperatures continued to be several degrees above average across the state. Topsoil moisture decreased while subsoil amounts stayed about the same as the previous week. Producers had an average of 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork. Spring barley was 34 percent harvested with the crop is in mostly good to excellent condition. Spring wheat was 98 percent turning color and 21 percent harvested last week with the crop rated in mostly good to fair condition. Sorghum was 62 percent headed and 11 percent turning color. The crop is in mostly good condition. Dry onions and sunflowers are rated in mostly good condition. Summer potatoes were 3 percent harvested and in mostly excellent to good condition. Fall potatoes were in mostly good to fair condition. Corn was 99 percent silked, 35 percent dough, and 4 percent dent by the end of the week. The crop is in mostly good to fair condition. Sugarbeets are still in mostly good condition. Dry beans were 75 percent flowered with the crop in mostly good condition. Second cutting was 93 percent by the end of the week with the 3rd cutting at 6 percent complete. The crop continues to be in mostly good condition. The increase in moisture improved pasture and range conditions. They are rated in mostly good to fair condition. Death loss for cattle was rated at average last week while death loss for sheep was below average. Livestock condition is rated in mostly good to excellent. Stored feed supplies are above average for this time of year. Date: 8/15/07
