Wolves kill livestock in southwestern Montana
BUTTE, Mont. (AP)--Wolves killed a calf and a yearling heifer in separate incidents south of Anaconda and in the Madison Valley, state officials said. The first incident was confirmed July 9 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services on private land south of Ennis. State officials issued a shoot-on-sight permit to the landowner, and also authorized federal authorities to remove one adult wolf in the area where the attack on the yearling occurred. Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials said they believed the Wedge wolf pack was involved. Another killing was confirmed July 11 by FWP officials in the Mount Haggin Wildlife Management Area south of Anaconda. They believe the Mount Haggin pack was responsible for that calf's death. "We don't know very much about this pack," said Liz Bradley, FWP wolf management specialist. "We'll work to collar a wolf in the pack to learn more about it." Officials planned to track the wolves to determine the pack's numbers and whether there are pups. "The wolves will be hazed and harassed if they are found in and around livestock," an FWP news release stated.
