Rains slow field work, irrigation

For the week ending Aug. 5, rains across the southeast and parts of south central Nebraska slowed irrigation and benefited dryland corn and soybeans, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office, Aug. 6.

Rains fell across the southern Panhandle, but left the north dry. Temperatures averaged 1 degree above normal across the state. The Southeast District saw the most precipitation, averaging over two inches. Much of the north central and northeast remained dry. The Northeast is now the second district to fall below normal precipitation since April 1. The Northwest District is the other at 22 percent below normal.

Corn conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 28 percent excellent, well above last year's 54 percent good or excellent rating. Irrigated fields rated 87 percent good or excellent while dryland fields rated 59 percent, both above year ago levels. Corn silked was 97 percent, behind last year's 98 percent but ahead of the 96 percent average. Corn in the dough stage was 47 percent, behind last year's 52 percent but ahead of the 40 percent average. Corn in the dent stage was 6 percent, behind last year's 7 percent but ahead of the 5 percent average.

Soybean conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 19 percent excellent, well above last year's 38 percent good or excellent condition. Soybeans blooming were 93 percent, near last year and average. Soybeans setting pods were 61 percent, behind last year's 79 percent and 64 percent average.

Alfalfa conditions rated 7 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 12 percent excellent, well above last year's 23 percent good or excellent condition. Third cutting was 43 percent complete, ahead of last year's 41 percent and 37 percent average. Wild hay conditions rated 4 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 21 fair, 58 percent good, and 13 percent excellent, well above last year's 19 percent good or excellent condition. Oats harvested was 94 percent, near last year's 95 percent and even with average.

Sorghum conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 65 percent good, and 17 percent excellent, well above last year's 45 percent good or excellent condition. Sorghum headed was 54 percent, behind last year's 72 percent and 55 percent average.

Dry bean conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 59 percent good, and 12 percent excellent, above last year's 64 percent good or excellent condition. Dry beans blooming were 79 percent, behind last year's 98 percent and 82 percent average. Dry beans setting pods were 32 percent, well behind last year's 66 percent and 48 percent average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 6 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 9 percent excellent, well above last year's 6 percent good or excellent condition.
