Hay selling slow to moderateIn Kansas, the hay trade is slow to moderate. Demand moderate to strong for dairy alfalfa, moderate for prairie hay, moderate to weak for grinding alfalfa, stock cow quality hay, alfalfa pellets. The current hot, dry weather is just what the alfalfa and prairie hay producers need to get caught up swathing and baling, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Aug. 7. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted. Southwest: Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement slow to moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small square, $150 to mostly $200; supreme dairy, $145-$165; premium, $140-$150; good, $110-$140. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $80-$90. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $105-$125. For the week ending July 28 10,779 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,639 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Oat hay, in large squares, $85-$120, depending on quality. Straw, in large bales, $40-$45, a little, $60. Good bermuda grass, in large squares, $125. South central: Dairy/grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets steady. Movement slow to moderate. Supreme dairy alfalfa, $140-$150; premium, $120-$140; good, stock cow, $100-$115. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $75-$80, Utility or wet, $70-$75. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $100-$115. For the week ending July 28, 3,191 tons of grinding alfalfa and 950 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $133-$160; dehydrated, 17%, $190. Straw, good, in large squares, $45-$50, low quality, $40. Southeast: Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady. Movement moderate to spots active.
