Warm days finally arrive

Iowa

Sunny, warm, windy days aided in drying fields during the week ending April 22, and by mid-week farmers were able to start fieldwork, avoiding wet areas that remained, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, April 23.

Grain movement was high at the beginning of the week while farmers waited for fields to dry, but movement slowed toward the end of the week.

There were 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.0 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated zero percent very short, 2 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus across the state. Subsoil moisture rated zero percent very short, 4 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 18 percent surplus.

Oats planted were 58 percent complete, 6 days behind last year's 81 percent and 10 days behind the five-year average of 88 percent. Seven percent of planted oats are emerging compared to last year's 26 percent. corn planting, at 8 percent, is 5 days behind last year's 23 percent. Fertilizer application, at 75 percent, was 5 percentage points below both last year's and the five-year average of 80 percent.

Pasture and range condition rated 4 percent very poor, 17 percent poor, 36 percent fair, 38 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Pastures are having a hard time putting growth out after the cold days at the beginning of the month. Warmer weather has dried feed lots. Conditions were greatly improved for calving.
