Spring wheat planting underwayMinnesota Minnesota's spring weather brought a slow start to planting this year, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Minnesota Field Office, April 23. During the week of April 9 to 15, the average temperature for the state was 34 degrees, 7 degrees below average. Temperatures were much warmer the following week, allowing the ground to thaw and drain. Full scale field-work is expected to start on April 25, five days later than last year. Of the cropland to be planted to corn, 7 percent was prepared for planting by April 22, well behind the five-year average of 19 percent. The average temperature for the week was 52.8 degrees, 7.9 degrees above normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of April 20 were rated 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 18 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 7 percent very short, 20 percent short, 61 percent adequate, and 12 percent surplus. As of April 22, an estimated 4 percent of Minnesota's spring wheat acreage was planted, compared to the five-year average of 19 percent. On the same date last year, 14 percent of the spring wheat was planted. Oat acreage was 11 percent planted, compared to 40 percent last year and 35 percent for the five-year average.
