Sen. Salazar continues push for Japan to open market to U.S. beColorado Recently, U.S. Senator Ken Salazar and a group of his bipartisan Senate colleagues sent a letter to President George W. Bush urging him to finally achieve full access to the Japanese beef market during the President's April 2007 summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Current Japanese import standards severely restrict U.S. beef imports, costing the U.S. cattle and meat processing industries over a billion dollars every year. "Some of the highest quality beef in the world is produced by farmers and ranchers right here in the state of Colorado," said Senator Salazar. "It is of critical importance that we push the President to achieve greater access for U.S. beef exports to Japan, and make sure that our ranchers in Colorado can benefit from this lucrative market. We must do everything we can to fight for the U.S. beef industry and protect rural livelihoods." The closure of the Japanese market to American beef has significantly impacted Colorado's agricultural industry. Colorado is the fifth largest agricultural exporting state of live animals and meat.
