Schering-Plough opens new distribution centerBy Doug Rich Schering-Plough Animal Health opened its new customer service and distribution center in Omaha, Neb., on April 18. "This facility will be the flagship among our distribution centers around the world," Tony Macci, vice-president Global Supply Chain, said. The new facility will consolidate two other facilities that were located in Omaha into one central location for animal health products. This distribution center is only 10 miles from the company's major vaccine manufacturing facility in Elkhorn, Neb. Macci said Omaha was an ideal location for their global distribution center. Macci said Omaha is located in the heart of livestock country close to their cattle and sine producer customers. It is centrally located in the U.S. with access to interstate highways. Eighty percent of the products from this distribution center will be shipped to customers in the U.S. The remaining 20 percent will be shipped to customers in 57 foreign countries. NuFlor, Banamine, and Guardian are among the products that will be stored and shipped from this center. The 153,800 square foot facility will be equipped with an automated conveyor belt system and able to make 1,500 shipments a week with 394 of those going overseas. There are over 300 Schering-Plough employees in the Omaha area. This includes 85 employees at the distribution center. There will be 55 employees in customer service and administrative positions and 30 employees in the warehouse. The Omaha facility will be home to Schering-Plough's U.S. cattle marketing team "The customer is at the center of everything," Raul Kohan, president of Schering-Plough Animal Health said. He said they concentrate on people, processes, and products to provide the best service for their customers. The keynote address at the ribbon cutting ceremony was presented by Bonnie Tandy Leblang, an award-winning food writer. Her column has appeared in Parents, House Beautiful, Parade, TV Guide and many other nationally known publications. In 1999, she launched the world's first daily syndicated food column with Universal Press Syndicate "Express Lane Cooking: A simple solution to what's for dinner". Leblang outlined the top ten food trends. They are flavor, good fats, whole grains, convenience, segmentation, weight management, functional foods, choices, and number one is safety. "People are talking about the source of their food," Leblang said. "We want our food safe." Doug Rich can be reached by phone at 785-749-5304 or by e-mail at richhpj@aol.com.
