Protecting our Journal familyWhen someone in a family is hurt, every member of the family feels the pain. The other family members become protective and want to keep the others from also being hurt. It is the same way for our Journal family. It may seem a bit corny, but because our readers and advertisers are so much a part of what we do here at the Journal, we consider you to be a part of our family. So when we receive calls about our readers and advertisers being scammed, we get mad. We get protective. We don't want it to happen to anyone else. Advertisers are a part of our family too--99.9 percent of them are hard-working, well-meaning farmers, ranchers and businessmen. They enjoy reading the Journal and find advertising with us a good move. But it is that fraction of a percent that we want to warn our readers about. If you are shopping through our classifieds and find a deal that seems "too good to be true," put up a red flag. Trust your gut instinct. Ask for more information about the advertiser. Call us to see if we can tell you the history of the advertiser. We will be able to tell you if we have had any other complaints or if we have done business with the advertiser for years. Please call 1-888-227-7171, ext. 1834 and talk to Dee about your experience. Never pay money up front. Do not give any personal information, including credit card numbers, Social Security numbers or bank information to anyone that is not a reputable business. We know it is the inclination of farmers and ranchers to do business on a handshake, but please be wise when conducting transactions. Don't exchange property without payment and likewise, do not pay for something unless you have inspected it and know it to be what was advertised. The Journal classified staff members do their best to screen advertisements and weed out the ones that are not legitimate. Unfortunately, they are becoming more frequent. But occasionally, we will miss an ad that has the intentions of scamming our readers out of their money. Please raise your awareness and let us know if you are scammed. We want to protect each other in our Journal family. Holly Martin can be reached by phone at 1-800-452-7171 ext. 1806 or e-mail at hmartin@hpj.com. B 4 4/23/07 6 Star Midwest Ag Date: 4/19/07
