So far so good for early wheat scouting

Colorado

Scouting for early season wheat diseases has started in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas respectively.

Dr. Ned Tisserat, professor at the Colorado State University Fort Collins reports that the Colorado wheat is in pretty good condition at the moment. No disease problems have been found to this point.

However, he recommends that we should be on the lookout for some of the following diseases.

Leaf and Stripe Rust: There are no indications for rust postules being spotted in Colorado but there are reports in Kansas and Oklahoma.

Powdery Mildew: Powdery mildew continues to be the most prevalent foliar disease observed on wheat in Oklahoma. Moderate to heavy powdery mildew was observed on the lower leaves of susceptible varieties at sampled location in Oklahoma.

Viruses: soilborne mosaic symptoms usually show up right after the wheat greens up. We do not have that this virus in Colorado but if you are seeing virus-like symptoms in your wheat fields, please send samples to Colorado State University Plant Diagnostic Lab in Fort Collins or contact your county Extension Office.

A report from Oklahoma has shown that wheat Soilborne Mosaic Virus and wheat Spindle Streak Mosaic Virus are continuing to be expressed in virus testing nurseries in Oklahoma.
