Cattle on feed numbers releasedSouth Dakota: Feedlots in South Dakota with 1,000-plus capacity reported 230,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on March 1, according to the South Dakota Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service. The March 1 number is up 20,000 head from a year ago but unchanged from February. Placements during February totaled 43,000 head, up 10,000 head from a year earlier but down 7,000 head from January. Marketings of fed cattle during February totaled 41,000 head, up 12,000 head from last year but down 1,000 head from January. Other disappearance during February totaled 2,000 head, down 2,000 from last year and down 1,000 head from January. The inventory was up 2 percent from last year and 8 percent above March 1, 2005. This is the highest March 1 inventory since the series began in 1994. Placements in feedlots during February totaled 360,000 head, up 9 percent from 2006 and 14 percent above 2005. Marketings of fed cattle during February totaled 380,000 head, up 6 percent from last year and 15 percent above February two years ago. Other disappearance during February totaled 10,000 head compared with 10,000 head during February 2006 and 15,000 head February 2005. Iowa: There were 864,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market in all feedlots in Iowa on March 1, down 3 percent from Feb. 1, and down 8 percent from March 1, 2006. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head had 530,000 head on feed, unchanged from last month but up 2 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head had 334,000 head on feed, down 7 percent from last month, and down 20 percent from last year. Placements during February totaled 78,000 head, a decrease of 41 percent from last month and 8 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head placed 64,000 head, down 16 percent from last month but up 7 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head placed 14,000 head. This is down 75 percent from last month and down 44 percent from last year. Marketings for February were 96,000 head, down 2 percent from last month but up 9 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head marketed 63,000 head, down 2 percent from last month but up 9 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head marketed 33,000 head, down 15 percent from last month, but up 10 percent from last year. Other disappearance totaled 8,000 head. Oklahoma: The inventory of cattle on feed was 350,000 head in Oklahoma on March 1, for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head, unchanged from the previous month, and down 4 percent from March 1, 2006. Placements during February were 59,000, up 20 percent from one year ago. Marketings of fed cattle during February were 58,000, up 4 percent from the same month last year. Other disappearance during February totaled 1,000 head. Texas: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.79 million head on March 1, down 7 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was down slightly from the Feb. 1 level. Producers placed 390,000 head in commercial feedlots during February, up 8 percent from a year ago, and up 15 percent from the January 2007 total. Texas commercial feeders marketed 385,000 head during February, up 4 percent from last year but down 1 percent from last month. On March 1, there were 2.36 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 84 percent of the state's total. The number on feed across the area was down 6 percent from last year and up slightly from the February total. February placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 337,000 head, up 13 percent from the January total. Marketings were up slightly from last month to 325,000 head. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 11.6 million head on March 1. This inventory was 4 percent below March 1, 2006. Placements in feedlots during February totaled 1.66 million head, 4 percent above February 2006. February placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds totaled 325,000 head; 600-699 pounds totaled 334,000 head; 700-799 pounds totaled 505,000 head; 800 pounds and greater totaled 495,000 head. Marketings of fed cattle during February totaled 1.71 million head, 7 percent above 2006. Kansas: The number of cattle on feed on March 1 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.42 million head, down 7 percent from a year ago and down slightly from Feb. 1. Placements during February totaled 395,000 head, down 4 percent from a year ago but 8 percent above January 2007 placements of 365,000 head. Marketings during February totaled 380,000 head, 6 percent above February 2006 but 15 percent below January 2007. Other disappearance was 25,000 head, up 5,000 from a year ago but down 5,000 from the previous month. The percent of February placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 13 percent; 600-699 pounds, 21 percent; 700-799 pounds, 37 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 29 percent. United States: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.6 million head on March 1. The inventory was 4 percent below March 1, 2006 but 4 percent above March 1, 2005. Placements in feedlots during February totaled 1.66 million, 4 percent above 2006 and 9 percent above 2005. Marketings of fed cattle during February totaled 1.71 million, 7 percent above 2006 and 5 percent above 2005. Other disappearance totaled 75,000 during February, 3 percent above 2006 but 3 percent below 2005.
