Wool Growers award college scholarshipNew Mexico Mary Elizabeth Shivers, Truth or Consequences, was awarded the New Mexico Wool Growers, Inc. annual scholarship at the group's annual convention held in Roswell, according to NMWGI Auxiliary President Joan Kincaid, Pinon. "Our scholarship is given to help with the tremendous expense of college and to encourage students who are interested and active in agriculture, to remain in the industry after college. Mary Beth certainly is a fine example of this endeavor and the agricultural industry will be fortunate to have her working in her chosen field in the future," said Kincaid. A May graduate of Hot Springs High School, Shivers plans to major in range science at New Mexico State University. She plans to use her degree to work as a range conservationist either in the government or the private sector. Shivers also has an interest in education and would like to work toward teaching agriculture education. Shivers has been active in 4-H and FFA since she was young and has held various offices in the Malpais Colts 4-H Club and served as secretary of her local FFA chapter. Judging has been one of Shivers favorite activities and she has participated in judging a wide variety of categories from wool to horticulture. Her judging expertise has sent her to the National Pasture and Range Judging Competition in Oklahoma City. She has placed first at the Western Region National Pasture and Range Contest for 4-H in 2005 and FFA in 2006, along with many other state and district awards in land judging and wool. In addition to these extensive 4-H and FFA honors she has been a varsity athlete in track, volleyball and basketball all while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, and ranked first in her class. Shivers has remained active on the family ranch and still shears her own sheep. She is the daughter of Mike and Lisa Shivers, Truth or Consequences. The NMWGI awards a $750 scholarship each year to a New Mexico 4-H or FFA member who is a senior graduating from high school and planning to attend NMSU's College of Agriculture and Home Economics.
