West Plains regional sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 4,800 head Sept. 19, compared to 4,720 head last week and 4,480 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers under 700 pounds sold $2 to $6 lower, although several front end quality 5 to 6 weight calves mostly with shots were steady with last week's market. Weights over 700 pound sold steady, however weights over 800 pounds were not well challenged. The supply was moderate to heavy, quality at times more impressive than last week, which could account for some calves trading at steady money. Most pressure aimed toward health risk cattle, including un-weaned, un-vaccinated and fleshy/fat, as well as lower quality and non-uniform bunches and last but certainly not least soggy bull calves. The supply consisted of 39% steers, 10% bulls and 51% heifers. Nearly 33% weight over 600 pounds.
