VS confirmed in Wyoming cattle

Wyoming

On Sept. 11, the Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Plum Island, N.Y., confirmed vesicular stomatitis in five cattle on a cow-calf premises in Converse County, Wyoming.

It was reported by the owner of the affected premises that an estimate of 35 cattle began showing clinical signs consistent with VS on Sept. 6, 2006. An FAD investigation was initiated the next day and a total of six animals were examined and sampled; the cattle showed more teat lesions than oral lesions. Five clinically affected cattle were positive for antibodies to vesicular stomatitis New Jersey virus on the competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, virus neutralization and complement fixation tests. There are an additional 365 clinically normal cattle and two clinically normal horses also on the premises. The affected premises is currently under state quarantine.

This is the first case of VS in cattle in Converse County in 2006. As of Sept. 10, Wyoming has five other equine premises in two counties with confirmed VS infection--Converse and Natrona.

APHIS Veterinary Services and the Wyoming Livestock Board will continue to monitor the situation and conduct response activities in an effort to minimize trade restrictions.

Please forward this information to your federal, state, and industry counterparts as necessary.
