While attending the EPA conference, State Director Banks also met with officials with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the U.S Department of Energy to explore possible renewable energy opportunities for rural Kansas. At the conclusion of the NREL/DOE/USDA meetings, Roya Stanely of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory stated, "NREL has worked with the EPA and USDA for several years. At this conference, EPA officials and others interested in environmental quality had the unique opportunity to learn about USDA Rural Development's programs and services that help rural Americans to be more energy efficient, and assist in the development of wind and other renewable energy projects. NREL looks forward to working with Kansas in supporting the development of more of these projects." During the Denver conference, attendees had the opportunity to tour NREL and see wind blades, gear boxes and other components of wind turbines, air conditioning technology that kills bacteria; along with cellulose and ethanol biorefinery technology.
