South Texas Farm and Ranch Show set for Oct. 25, 26Texas The 22nd annual South Texas Farm and Ranch Show will be held Oct. 25 and 26 at the Victoria Community Center. Activities will begin at 6:30 a.m. each day with registration and breakfast. The sessions will begin at 7 a.m. Sessions on biodiesel fuel and ethanol production will be held for the first time this year, said Joe Janak, Texas Cooperative Extension agent for Victoria County. Speakers will discuss fuel prices, strategies to produce biodiesel and new technology. Participants will also get the latest information on raised-bed gardening, turfgrass varieties and management, composting, crepe myrtle varieties, Xeriscape and Earthkind gardening and vegetable gardening. The Cattlemen's College on both days will include sessions on animal and premise identification, restocking strategies, producing and marketing show steers and heifers, the FARM ASSIST program, getting started in the hay business, results of the multi-county hay testing campaign, and a range and pasture herbicide update. Determining a bull's value and using visual appraisal in selecting bulls will also be discussed. Marketing strategies for cotton and grain and an update on the farm bill will be discussed during the crop session. Some sessions will be repeated. Sen. Todd Staples, R-Palestine, will be the keynote speaker at the Oct. 25 luncheon. Dr. Jim Mazurkiewicz, director of the Texas Agricultural Lifetime Leadership program, will be the keynote dinner speaker at 7 p.m. Jim Bob Solsberg, a humorist from Big Lake, will be the keynote speaker at the luncheon on Oct. 26. The trade show, featuring more than 125 booths, will be open 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Oct. 25 and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 26. All activities are free, except for the lunches and dinner, which cost $7 each. The Farm and Ranch Show is coordinated by the South Texas Farm and Ranch Show Committee and the Victoria County Extension office.
