Significant harvest progress madeMinnesota Minnesota's soybean crop continued to advance with harvest just beginning in some areas of the state during the week ending Sept. 17, according to the Minnesota Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Sept. 18. Significant harvest progress was made on dry edible beans and corn cut for silage. The sweet corn harvest neared completion. The average temperature for the week was 61.7 degrees, 3.1 degrees above normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Sept. 15 were rated 12 percent very short, 25 percent short, 62 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. As of Sept. 17, soybeans turning yellow were estimated at 93 percent, compared to 85 percent for the five-year average. Soybeans dropping leaves were 67 percent, compared to 51 percent for the average. Soybeans mature were 23 percent compared to 16 percent for the average. Soybean crop condition was rated 64 percent good or excellent, an increase of 6 percentage points from the previous week. Forty-three percent of the corn acreage reached the mature stage, compared to 27 percent for the average. Corn crop condition was rated 63 percent good or excellent, an increase of 5 percentage points from the previous week. Sweet corn harvest was estimated at 92 percent complete, dry bean harvest was 56 percent complete, and the sugarbeet harvest was at 9 percent. Sugarbeet crop condition was rated 62 percent good or excellent, and sunflower condition was rated 62 percent good or excellent. Date: 9/22/06
