School of Natural Resources to hold open house and tailgate parNebraska The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's School of Natural Resources will celebrate moving into its newly renovated building, Hardin Hall, with an open house at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 29. Tom Casadevall, former acting director of the U.S. Geological Survey and now regional director in Denver, will be the featured speaker at 5 p.m. The public is invited and can tour the building at 33rd and Holdrege streets before the ceremony, as well as enjoy a tailgate party and barbecue afterward. Students and alumni in particular are invited to attend, said Mike Jess, SNR outreach coordinator. Tours begin at 3:30 p.m. University officials will make brief remarks. "This brand new facility will make our efforts much more cohesive," said SNR Director Mark Kuzila. "Since we've been in eight different buildings, it's great to be in one place where we can interact easily." Students in the school now have a single, brand-new, up-to-date building for their classes and labs, Kuzila said, and faculty and staff will have a greater sense of unity among the former units brought into the school from 1997 to 2003. Faculty and staff like working in the new building and are especially pleased with how much better they will be able to serve their students, the state and the nation, he added. Funded by U.S. Department of Agriculture and state money, the $16.5 million retrofitting of the former Clifford Hardin Nebraska Center for Continuing Education on East Campus provides 150,500 square feet of facility and brings together many units spread across two campuses. It will include new laboratories, an auditorium with a new audio-visual system and a large lobby with an outreach mall and store. Most of the building was gutted and renovated; new energy-efficient windows were installed; and an additional 12,000 square feet of lab space and a new north entrance were added Included in the SNR are the former departments of Agricultural Meteorology and Forestry, Fisheries Wildlife, as well as the Conservation and Survey Division; the Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies; the Great Plains Regional Center for Global Environmental Change; the High Plains Regional Climate Center; the National Drought Mitigation Center; the Nebraska Earth Systems Education Network; and the Water Center. Those wishing to attend should respond by Sept. 20. Call Jacki Loomis at 402-472-7550 or e-mail her at jloomis@unlnotes.unl.edu. Date: 9/22/06
