Nebraska's 2006 corn and soybean yields second highest

Based on Sept. 1 conditions, Nebraska's corn crop is forecast at 1.25 billion bushels, 3 percent above last month but 2 percent below last year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. Yield is forecast at 157 bushels per acre, second highest of record, four bushels above last month and three bushels above a year ago. The record high yield of 166 bushels per acres was set in 2004. Area to be harvested for grain remained at 7.95 million acres, down 4 percent from a year ago. "Field counts have indicated a record high plant population and ear count which have in part offset the impact of drought conditions experienced during June and July," said Mark Harris, Director of the Nebraska Field Office.

Soybean production in Nebraska is forecast at 240 million bushels, up 11 percent from last month, 2 percent above last year and the highest on record. Acres for harvest, at 4.8 million, are unchanged from last month and are second highest on record. Yield is forecast at 50 bushels per acre, up 5 bushels per acre from August but down 0.5 bushel from 2005's record high.

Sorghum production in Nebraska is forecast at 24.0 million bushels, up 10 percent from the August forecast and last year. Acres for harvest, at 300,000, are unchanged and up 20 percent from the previous year. Yield forecast, at 80 bushels per acre, is up seven bushels from the previous month but down seven bushels from last year.

Sugar beet production of 1.28 million tons is up 7 percent from last month and up 39 percent from 2005 due largely to more acres planted in 2006. Yield, at 22.0 tons per acre, is up 1.5 tons from last month and 1.6 tons from last year.
