Nebraska Youth Beef Leadership Symposium convenes Nov. 4 to 6 iNebraska The fourth annual Nebraska Youth Beef Leadership Symposium Nov. 4 to 6 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Animal Science Complex will introduce Nebraska high school students to beef industry careers, current issues and an opportunity to use their leadership skills in a community setting. In addition, six $500 scholarships for UNL's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will be presented. The three-day symposium, geared toward Nebraska high school juniors and seniors, features presentations on goal setting, leadership development, food safety and international beef promotions, said Dennis Brink, UNL animal scientist and the symposium's coordinator. Students also will experience several hands-on presentations in beef quality assurance and the latest meat science technologies. "This education symposium will give students hands-on presentations on innovative cattle production practices and a variety of other opportunities from marketing to networking with sponsors and panel members," Brink said. A career opportunity panel discussion and banquet will conclude the program. Several UNL graduates will serve as panel members and give their perspective on the importance of a college education and what it takes to make it in the "real world." Several career areas within the beef industry will be represented by the panel members. A new addition to this year's symposium is a marketing project, which will allow students to take on the role of a national retailer or restaurant chain. Students will be responsible for marketing a new beef product and make a final marketing plan presentation.
