Nebraska Beef Council announces new directors

Results are in for the Nebraska Beef Council Board of Director elections. One new director and three re-elected directors were elected uncontested and will begin their four-year terms Jan. 1, 2007.

Thedford beef producer, David W. Hamilton, was elected to serve District 2 as a member of the Nebraska Beef Council's nine-member Board of Directors, he was uncontested in his district. Hamilton is a cow-calf producer in the Sandhills and he and his wife, Loretta, have four daughters.

Hamilton is a past member of the Cattlemen's Beef Board, as well as an Executive Committee member. He is past chairman of Nebraska Cattlemen's Marketing Committee and Cow-Calf Council. He is a past member and chair of the Nebraska Corn-Fed Beef Program. He is a member of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, Nebraska Cattlemen, Sandhills Cattle Association, and the Nebraska Section Society for Range Management.

Besides being active in the industry, Hamilton is also very active in his community. He has been a board member for the Thedford High School Board of Education for the past 20 years, in which he was the chairman for 10 years. He is also a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church and the Thedford Service Club.

Ewing beef producer David Wright was elected uncontested to serve District 4. Wright is a commercial cow-calf producer and has lived and worked on the family ranch near Ewing for over 30 years. He and his wife, Joan, have three children, who attend Neligh Elementary and Junior High School.

Wright has served on Congressman Tom Osborne's Agriculture Committee. He also served on Don Stenberg's Agriculture Committee and is one of the founding directors for Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska.

Wright is an active member of his community. He is a member of the St. Peters Church of Neligh, a past parish council member and is a Neligh Chamber of Commerce board member. He is a member of R-Calf USA and ICON.

Paxton beef producer Mark Spurgin was elected uncontested for Nebraska Beef Council District 6. Spurgin, along with his mother, Joan, own and operate Spurgin, Inc., which is a combination dryland and irrigated farm with a feedlot and yearling operation. Spurgin and his wife, Pam, have one daughter, MaKenzi, a senior at Paxton Consolidated High School.

Spurgin is quite active in the industry. He has served on the local level as the Ogallala Affiliate President of the Nebraska Cattlemen, on the state level as member services vice chairman and past Region 6 Director of the Nebraska Cattlemen, and on the national level serving as a member of the Beef Safety Committee.

Friend beef producer Ann Bruntz ran uncontested for Nebraska Beef Council District 8. Bruntz and her husband, David, farm and feed cattle south of Friend. They have had a diversified farming operation for 35 years, which has included a cow-calf herd, cattle feeding, corn, sorghum, alfalfa and soybean production. Ann and David are parents of Julie and Andrew (deceased).

Bruntz has a long history with the beef industry which has included serving as president of both the Nebraska Feeder's Auxiliary and the Nebraska CattleWomen. She has served two terms on the Cattlemen's Beef Research, Promotion and Education Board where she was vice-chair of the Issues Management Subcommittee and a member of the Operating Committee for two years. Bruntz has also served as chairman of the Nebraska Cattlemen's Research and Education Foundation.

A Nebraska Beef Council director represents beef producers on the state and national level for both domestic and international marketing ventures. The directors make investment decisions for beef checkoff dollars and determine which promotion programs are the most beneficial for the industry. This process is based on a detailed evaluation system and beef producer feedback.

The Nebraska Beef Council is a non-profit organization served by a nine-member Board of Directors. These voluntary directors oversee Nebraska's beef checkoff and checkoff-funded programs. Programs for marketing and promotion of beef are funded by the $1 beef checkoff.
