NAMA passes gavel to Rick Schwein

The North American Millers' Association elected Rick L. Schwein, president of Grain Millers Canada Corp. and a senior vice president for Grain Millers, Inc., chairman of NAMA for the 2006-2008 term. The announcement was made at the annual Board of Directors meeting held Sept. 22 in Avon, Colo. Grain Millers operates three mills throughout North America providing both conventional and organic oat, corn, barley and Wheat products to food processors throughout the continent.

Prior to joining Grain Millers, Schwein was president of La Crosse Milling Company for 10 years after enjoying a 16 year career with General Mills, Inc., in purchasing and grain merchandising functions. He is a graduate of Michigan State University and has more than 30 years of grain and milling experience.

Schwein has been active in the industry having served on the Executive Committee of the North American Millers' Association for a number years as well as the immediate past chairman of the former American Oat Association. He is a former member of the Chicago Board of Trade as well as the Minneapolis Grain Exchange and served on the Trade Rules Committee for the National Grain and Feed Association.

During his opening remarks, Chairman Schwein applauded out-going Chairman Guy Shoemaker, president of Horizon Milling, LLC, for his leadership and stated "all of that leadership is meaningless if there aren't active members ready, willing and able to step up to the plate when a job needs to be done. Fortunately, we have those members."

At the same meeting, John C. Miller, president of Miller Milling Company, was elected vice chairman and Donald L. Mennel, president of The Mennel Milling Company, was elected to a three-year term on the Executive Committee.

NAMA is the trade association representing 48 companies that operate 170 wheat, oat and corn mills in 38 states and Canada. Their collective production capacity exceeds 160 million pounds of product each day, more than 95 percent of the total industry production.
