Wheat planting nearly completeKansas Precipitation for most areas of the state was very light with some areas receiving no rain during the week ending Oct. 22, according to the Kansas Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Oct. 23. Producers averaged 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork last week. Winter Wheat planting and row crop harvesting were the major activities, though progress was slow for some producers. Topsoil moisture was rated 16 percent very short, 32 percent short, 50 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 29 percent very short, 39 percent short, and 32 percent adequate. Ninety-three percent of the Wheat has been planted, three points ahead of both last year and the five-year average. Seventy-one percent has emerged, the same as last year but one point behind the five-year average. Wheat condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 36 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Eighty-two percent of the corn has been harvested, compared to 84 percent last year and 86 percent for the five-year average. Eighty-two percent of the sorghum is mature, compared to 89 percent last year and 88 percent for the five-year average. Forty-one percent has been harvested, thirteen points behind both last year and the five-year average. Sorghum condition was rated 10 percent very poor, 24 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 25 percent good, and 7 percent excellent. Sixty-four percent of the soybeans have been harvested, compared to 70 percent last year and 66 percent for the five-year average. Ninety-five percent of the sunflowers are in the bracts yellow stage, three points behind both last year and the five-year average. Eighty-six percent is in the mature dry down stage, compared to 91 percent last year and 90 percent for the five-year average. Twenty-four percent has been harvested, compared to 50 percent for last year and 52 percent for the five-year average. Sunflower condition was rated 7 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 32 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Seventy percent of the cotton is in the bolls open stage, compared to 88 percent last year and 77 percent for the five-year average. Twenty-one percent has been harvested, compared to 3 percent last year and 8 percent for the five-year average. Cotton condition was rated 5 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Range and pasture conditions were rated 18 percent very poor, 33 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 14 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated 4 percent very short, 13 percent short, 79 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated 13 percent very short, 35 percent short, 49 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were rated 20 percent very short, 28 percent short, 51 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Date: 10/26/06
