Wheat Foods Council adds "Just for Kids" section to websiteThe Wheat Foods Council launches Just for Kids, a fun, educational addition to their website (www.wheatfoods.org) created for children ages 9 through 12. The site features recipes, games, quizzes and fact-based information about Wheat and other grains, enabling children to understand the grain life cycle from crop harvest to health benefits. "Grains are an important part of children's diets and their journey from the farm to the table makes for an interesting and educational story," said Marcia Scheideman, M.S., R.D., president of the Wheat Foods Council. "With childhood obesity on the rise, we believe that it is important to educate kids about the foods they eat enabling them to make healthy, informed meal and snack choices." Just for Kids provides detailed information about Wheat and other grains at each of their many stages. Children will learn about the composition of a Wheat kernel; the six Wheat varieties and their geographic origin; flour milling; whole and enriched grain foods; MyPyramid daily dietary recommendations; serving sizes and more. The site is a resource for kids but can be utilized by parents and teachers as they educate their students and children about nutrition, science and agriculture. Just for Kids also provides links to the kids' sections of other commodity groups, MyPyramid and state Wheat commissions, allowing for convenient access to supplemental information. "We know that eating habits develop early in life," states Scheideman. "We are committed to providing information about grains in a fun and interactive way in order to encourage kids to consume grain foods as part of a healthy diet." Date: 10/25/06
