Nielsen named Kermit Wagner Distinguished Professor of Animal S

Nebraska

Merlyn Nielsen, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln animal scientist, has been named the Kermit Wagner Professor of Animal Science.

The distinguished professorship includes a $10,000 professorial stipend. The award was established in the University of Nebraska Foundation in memory of the late NU regent from Schuyler.

Nielsen teachers undergraduate animal breeding and graduate courses in quantitative genetics. His research has included studies using beef cattle as well as mice, the latter in pilot studies yielding results for subsequent livestock applications.

Nielsen's beef studies have evaluated life-cycle efficiency for cattle that differ in level of milk production. His mouse research has centered on novel selection methods to increase litter size, and more recently, on selection to reduce maintenance feed requirements of animals.

His numerous research accomplishments have benefited Nebraska's beef producers, said Don Beermann, head of UNL's animal science department.

"Dr. Nielsen's genetic selection experiments have contributed greatly to our understanding of critical relationships between important quantitative traits," Beermann said. "He is dedicated to providing students the highest quality research and classroom learning experiences, and his efforts benefit the Nebraska beef industry in many ways."

Nielsen makes certain the fruits of his research reach the beef industry, particularly the Nebraska beef industry. He routinely communicates the implications of his research in publications and teams with UNL Extension faculty by explaining his research in a way they can relay to producers.

He is an effective teacher and student adviser, having advised 25 graduate students and published more than 100 refereed papers. He also serves as the department's undergraduate research coordinator.

Nielsen holds several honors and awards, most recently the Holling Family Award for Teaching Excellence, the Award of Merit for Distinguished Achievement in Agriculture from Gamma Sigma Delta, Outstanding Scientist by Sigma Xi and the Rockefeller Prentice Memorial Award in Animal Breeding and Genetics by the American Society of Animal Science.

He is the incoming president and has served as secretary of the Midwest Section of the American Society of Animal Science and served on the editorial board for the Journal of Animal Science.

Nielsen joined UNL in 1974 as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 1978 and professor in 1984.

He received his doctorate and master's degrees from Iowa State University in 1974 and 1972, respectively, and his bachelor's degree from UNL in 1970.
