Nebraska Limousin breeders produce top femalesNebraska Maternal efficiency is a hallmark of profitability in the cattle business. Each year, the North American Limousin Foundation honors the elite mother cows in its registry with inclusion on the Focus Dams list. Only 344 females, representing less than 1 percent of the breed's active dams, earned mention during the fall 2006 evaluation. Depending upon their number of progeny, females must meet certain criteria for maximum age at last calving. Further, the cows must have complete production histories, and their calves had to weigh 5 percent more than the average weaning weight in their contemporary groups. The following Limousin breeders from Nebraska own at least one of the Focus Dams in the fall evaluation: Leon Leishman, Blair; Remsburg Farm, Craig; Lonely Valley Limousin, Creston; Val Hunt, Orleans; Hunt Limousin Ranch, Oxford; Crook Limousin, Rising City; Wach Limousin, Wauneta; and Rob Brawner, Wood Lake. For the complete Focus Dams list or more information about maternal efficiency in cattle production, see the "Programs" section of the NALF website (www.nalf.org) or call the NALF office at 303-220-1693. The North American Limousin Foundation (www.nalf.org), headquartered in Englewood, Colo., provides programs and services--including genetic evaluation of 5,000 active sires--to about 4,000 members and their commercial customers. The Limousin breed and its Lim-Flex hybrid lead the beef industry in muscle-growth efficiency and ideally complement British breeds. Date: 10/25/06
