Weather delays harvest in some areasNebraska For the week ending Nov. 19, mild weather conditions allowed harvest to near completion in the eastern third of the state while a wintry mix of snow and rain delayed harvest in the central third, according to the Nebraska Field Office, National Agricultural Statistic Service, Nov. 20. High winds in western counties at mid week battered crops still in the field. Other activities included fall tillage and fertilizer application. With exception of the Northwest district which averaged above normal temperatures last week, the state as a whole averaged nearly 2 degrees below normal. The Northwest district saw the biggest fluctuation in temperature with highs in the mid 60s and lows near the single digits. The Central districts averaged over a quarter inch of precipitation, while the other five districts received only traces of moisture. Corn harvest was 93 percent complete, behind last year's 98 percent and near the 94 percent average. Harvest continued to be least advanced in the Southwest district. Sorghum harvest was 96 percent complete, behind the 100 percent of last year and even with the average. Winter Wheat conditions declined and rated 0 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 7 percent excellent, which is now below a year ago. Conditions have declined due to dry weather and depleting soil moisture profiles. Date: 11/21/06
