USDA to collect final 2006 production statsMissouri How many acres of corn, soybeans, cotton, rice, milo, and other crops have Missouri farmers harvested this growing season? Have yields been above or below expectations? These are just a couple of the critical questions the Missouri Field Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service will be asking producers as part of the December Agricultural Survey. "The December Agricultural Survey, also known as the Crops/Stocks Survey, is one of the largest and most important surveys conducted each year by NASS," explained Gene Danekas, Director of the NASS Missouri Field Office. "This survey provides the official USDA data on final production and harvested acres of major agricultural commodities." All sectors of the agricultural industry rely on NASS acreage, production, and stocks estimates to help make sound business and marketing decisions. "This survey data also benefits farmers and ranchers by providing a level playing field. Producers will have access to the same information at the same time as elevators, input suppliers, bankers, and others with whom you do business," added Danekas. Selected Missouri producers will be contacted by telephone or personal interview during the first two weeks of December and asked to provide data on their acres planted and harvested, total yield, and production for major crops grown in the State. NASS will also collect data on quantities of grains and oilseeds stored on farms. The information will be compiled and analyzed with the information collected from more than 77,000 producers nationwide and published in a series of USDA reports. These reports include the Annual Acreage report and quarterly Grain Stocks report, both to be released on January 12, as well as the monthly and annual Crop Production report. As with all NASS surveys, information provided by respondents is by law kept confidential. "NASS safeguards the confidentiality of all responses and publishes only state- and national-level data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identified," stated Danekas. All reports are available on the NASS website: www.nass.usda.gov. For more information on NASS surveys and reports, call the NASS Missouri Field Office at 800-551-1014. Date: 11/20/06
