Transitions in family farm managementKansas Extension offices in the Post Rock District, Phillips-Rooks District, Smith, Russell and Ellis counties have teamed up to offer a "Transitions in Family Farm Management" program in several counties in December and another series of programs in family farm management but with different topics and speakers again in February. The program planning committee initially designed this program for women managing the farm. After further development of the program the counties involved feel it would be appropriate for anyone managing the family farm. Crop and pasture leasing rates, equitable arrangements and the importance of communication in crop shares will be discussed by Extension Ag Economists Sarah Fogleman. Rodney Jones, Extension Economist will be talking about financial realities that need to be considered to accomplish a smooth transient to the next generation. Mark Wood with the Kansas Farm Management Association will discuss some of the income and estate tax issues that can come into play when a farm family transitions from one generation to another. Mark will also discuss some of the entity structure options that can be employed to minimize some of the taxes and smooth the transfer of operating assets.
