Sheep, meat goat topics featured at 2006 Missouri Livestock SymposiumMissouri The 2006 Missouri Livestock Symposium will be held at the Kirksville Middle School, 1515 S. Cottage Grove, Kirksville, on Dec. 1 and 2. Symposium hours are 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Dec. 1 and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 2. There are no costs to register or attend the Symposium and no pre-registration is required. This year the Missouri Livestock Symposium will feature nationally and internationally known experts and speakers from coast to coast. They will address topics of interest to owners of horses, beef cattle, sheep, meat goats and stock dogs. Additionally, the Symposium features speakers and topics on wildlife, gardening and quilting. Sheep and Meat Goat topics to be addressed include "Market Options for Sheep and Meat Goats," "A Multi-tool Approach to Internal Parasite Control," What You Need to Know About Feeding By-Products to Sheep and Meat Goats," "Selecting for Twins and Against Triplets," "Common Sheep and Goat Health Problems and Solution" and "Tips for Pasture Based Sheep and Goat Production." Sheep and Meat Goat section speakers at the 2006 Missouri Livestock Symposium include producer Dean Houghton of Polo, Mo.; Dr. Don Morrical, Iowa State University; and Susan Schoenian, University of Maryland. In addition to the topics and speakers mentioned above, those with an interest in stock dogs will have an opportunity to hear from one of the country's leading stock dog trainers, Al Vieira of California. An inductee of the Stock Dog Handlers Hall of Fame, Vieira has trained dogs in the past for Disney movies and also trained a pair of coyotes for a Disney production. Vieira says he trains working dogs for both cattlemen and sheep producers. He will give three talks at the 2006 Missouri Livestock Symposium: "Choosing the Proper Dog", "Starting the Stock Dog--Teaching the Handler", and "Advanced Training: From Enclosed Pen to Outside Work." The Symposium will also feature a top lineup of forages related programs that may interest sheep and meat goat producers. The forages section features two separate panel discussions that also allow for questions and answers. One of the panels is composed of just livestock producers who have also done an exceptional job with their forages production; the other panel will consist of recognized forage experts including Dr. Don Ball of Auburn University in Alabama, Dr. Rob Kallenbach and Dr. David Davis, forage specialists at the University of Missouri, and Mark Kennedy a state grasslands specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. If that's not enough, 2006 Missouri Livestock Symposium Committee Chair Garry Mathes says, "there are also programs for those interested in horses or beef cattle." Two keynote celebrities are also featured. Baxter Black will perform Saturday night, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are $10 each. Call 660-665-9866 for ticket information.
