Pointer appointed to soybean boardNebraska Loyd Pointer of Sargent was recently appointed by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns to serve a three year term to the United Soybean Board. Loyd currently serves as the vice chairman of the Nebraska Soybean Board and also chairs the domestic marketing committee. He has served the soybean farmers of District 8 the past nine years and looks to take that leadership to the national board. "I look forward to using my experience on the state level to help better serve Nebraska soybean farmers and help advance this very exciting industry," said Loyd. Loyd and his wife Rhonda manage and operate a row-crop operation in Sargent that consists of soybeans and corn. The United Soybean Board is the national checkoff organization which was founded in the 1990 farm bill and represents all United States soybean farmers. The soybean checkoff serves to promote the U.S. soybean industry domestically as well as internationally. Its goal is to strengthen the position of U.S. soybeans in the marketplace and to expand domestic and foreign markets, including new uses for soybeans and soybean products. The program is funded through a mandatory 0.5 percent assessment of the net market price of soybeans. Half of the funds go to work with state-level soybean organizations, like the Nebraska Soybean Board. The remaining funds are forwarded to the United Soybean Board. Gregg Fujan, chairman of the Nebraska Soybean Board is pleased about the appointment. "Nebraska has always had a strong tradition of great leadership on the United Soybean Board and I know Loyd will be no different. Loyd's leadership will bring new ideas that will help all soybean farmers strengthen their position in the soybean industry." Loyd will serve beside two other United Soybean Board directors from Nebraska, Greg Anderson from Newman Grove and Chuck Myers from Lyons, Neb. Loyd will succeed Norm Husa of Barneston who currently serves as the secretary of the United Soybean Board. The nine-member Nebraska Soybean Board collects and disburses the Nebraska share of funds generated by the one-half of 1 percent times the net sales price per bushel soybean checkoff. Nebraska soybean checkoff funds are invested in domestic and foreign markets, including new uses for soybeans and soybean products. Date: 11/21/06
