Plummer awarded William Russell ScholarshipIowa Paul Joseph Plummer, D.V.M., Boone, Iowa, has been awarded the 2006 William A. Russell Memorial Scholarship for advanced study. Russell's son, C. A. Russell of Hilmar, Calif., made the presentation of the $5,000 award at the Junior Banquet on November 4 during The All American Jersey Show & Sale in Louisville, Ky. Plummer is a doctoral student in veterinary microbiology and preventative medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. Over the next two years he will be completing research for his Ph.D. thesis on the virulence mechanisms of Campylobacter jejuni, the most common bacterial cause of human food borne gastrointestinal disease in the United States. After completion of his Ph.D., Plummer intends to pursue an academic career combining his clinical and molecular microbiology training to study bacterial diseases of importance to cattle health and consumer food safety. As a Pennsylvania 4-H youth, Plummer showed Registered Jerseys at local, state, regional and national shows and won the Max Gordon Trophy for senior showmanship at The All American Junior Jersey Show in 1995. Plummer served as vice-president of the Pennsylvania Junior Jersey Cattle Association and was a state director for two terms. An outstanding student, he was a recipient of the 1996 Paul Jackson Memorial Scholarship and the Stanley K. Bansen Memorial Scholarship in 1998. Established in 2005, this scholarship is designated for advanced students seeking degrees in dairy science, animal science, large animal veterinary practice, dairy production or manufacturing, or dairy product. It recognizes Bill Russell's lifetime involvement in the Registered Jersey business, which included service as an Area Representative for the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) and National All-Jersey Inc. until his death in 1976. The Russell Advanced Studies Scholarship is the largest scholarship offered in AJCA history. About the Jersey Scholarship Funds The American Jersey Cattle Association has made strategic investments in Jersey youth since 1958 when it created the National Heifer Sale to provide annual funding for educational programs and awards. The first of nine youth scholarship funds now managed by the AJCA was established in 1965. Applications for 2007-08 Jersey youth scholarships will be accepted from April 1 through July 1, 2007.
