Paola-area student named national finalist for FFA awardKansas The National FFA Organization named John M. Menefee of Paola as a national finalist for the National FFA Proficiency Award in Swine Production-Entrepreneurship. Menefee is one of only four people chosen to compete for this award at the national finals held during the 79th National FFA Convention, Oct. 25 to 28 in Indianapolis, Ind. Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excelled as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while they gained hands on career experience. Swine Production-Entrepreneurship is one of 51 FFA proficiency award categories offered at local, state and national levels. Menefee, a member of the Paola FFA Chapter, became eligible for the national award after winning the Kansas State FFA competition earlier this year. Menefee has grown his SAE into an 87 animal swine operation. He raises Hampshires and crossbreds and has been able to market his hogs through Cargill Meat Solutions. Menefee has purchased seven farrowing huts to expand his business. He is a member of the Paola FFA Chapter in Kansas, and his advisors are Jeff Hines and Josh Evans. Menefee is a graduate of Paola High School and is attending Fort Scott Community College and studying agricultural education. He is the son of Max and Michelle Menefee. This award program is sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. In recognition for being a finalist, each of the four finalists will receive a plaque and $500. The national winner of the Swine Production-Entrepreneurship Award will receive an additional $500 during a special ceremony at the national FFA convention FFA is a national youth organization of 490,017 student members preparing for leadership careers in science, business and technology of agriculture with 7,210 local chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
