MGGA 51st annual convention returns to Great Falls

Montana

Over 500 Wheat and barley producers from around the state are expected to convene at the Best Western Heritage Inn in Great Falls, Nov. 28 to Dec. 1, for the 51st Annual Montana Grain Growers Association Convention and Trade Show.

Darin Arganbright, 2006 convention chairman and MGGA vice-president said, "For over 50 years, MGGA has been bringing producers, exhibitors and top-notch speakers together to focus on the future of Montana's grain industry. This year will be no different. We've got a sold out trade show, a jam-packed agenda and lots of opportunities for producers to network with each other, hear from ag professionals and provide input on the direction of MGGA policy for the coming year. If you raise Wheat or barley or are in a related industry, you need to be in Great Falls the last week of November."

To kick-off this year's convention Dr. Danny Klinefelter will present a two-part business management seminar on Tuesday, Nov. 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. Klinefelter is an industry-renowned expert on agricultural finance and management development. Presented in two parts, Klinefelter's Tuesday workshop will explore enterprise risk management, asset utilization for maximum financial performance, your farm as a bio-based manufacturing plant, and cultivating your human resources in "The Top Ten Emerging Management Issues." The second portion, "Alternative Business Arrangements" will discuss "out of the box" solutions that real farms have used to reduce costs, reduce risks and maximize profits, including multi-farmer owned repair shops and equipment sharing.

The theme of this year's convention "Embracing Agriculture in Transition" continues with Klinefelter addressing convention goers on Wednesday on the "Top Drivers of Change." Thursday's keynote speaker, Dr. Barry Flinchbaugh, Professor of Ag Economics at KSU, will discuss the myths and realities of the upcoming farm bill in the new Washington D.C. political climate.

An outstanding lineup of topics is on tap for our Pro Producer Education Sessions including Oilseeds for the Future, Controlling Wheat Stem Sawfly, New Varieties, Biobased Fuels, Understanding Basis & Hedge-to-Arrive Contracts, Soil Fertility for Legumes, Quality Issues for World Markets, Wildlife Habitat Opportunities, Mapping Field Applications, In-Field Protein Monitoring and an update on CSP. Wednesday evening features a fun-filled dinner event for all at the Prairie Heritage Center organized and presented by the Young Grain Growers. Entertainment during our Thursday evening President's Banquet will be provided by the Vigilante Players.

Arganbright added, "A key part of our convention is the resolutions process. This sets the organization's policy direction for the next year and we need as much member input as possible." Committee meetings are Wednesday afternoon and the resolutions process will be completed on Thursday afternoon.
