Local Simmental breeder receives honors

Kansas

Shiloh Simmental of Salina Kan., recently had 13 cows recognized in the American Simmental Association's 2006 Cow Award list. These awards reflect a female's genetic merit for profitability and an ASA member's commitment to data reporting.

The ASA All Purpose Index (API) was used as an underlying criterion, as well as requiring the cows be on Total Herd Enrollment (THE, either TR or SR). The API takes all EPDs of cattle production (cow-calf, feedlot and carcass traits) into consideration in calculating an animal's relative economic value. To be eligible for a Cow Award, a female must have an API in the top 10 percentile of the population and be actively enrolled in the THE Program. In addition to meeting the API and THE conditions, a cow must achieve high reproductive standards to qualify for an award, the standards are: a) wean seven calves by 8.5 years of age for Gold; b) wean five calves by 6.5 years of age for Silver; c) wean three calves by 4.5 years of age for Bronze.

In acknowledgment of the fact that some breeding stock are utilized solely for terminal beef production purposes, the 2006 awards also recognize cows with outstanding Terminal Index (TI) values. To be considered for recognition, a female must be in the top 10 percentile of the population for TI. The TI takes into account all traits of relevance to terminal sire production (calving ease, growth and carcass traits) to determine an animal's economic worth. All traits except milk production, maternal calving ease, mature cow size and stayability (cowherd traits) are used in the calculation. Besides being exceptional for TI, the cow must have a weaned calf on record and be enrolled in THE to receive an award.

ASA members are recognized for owning Simmental and /or Simbrah cows that excelled by meeting the requirements described above. Each member with at least one award-winning cow is listed along with the number of cows achieving award status under each category. The American Simmental Association is headquartered in Bozeman, Mont., and maintains the herd registries for the Simmental and Simbrah breeds of cattle. ASA has an active adult and junior membership of nearly 8,000.
