Successful 2005 BED Cattle Crawl sets stage for 2006

Plans are underway for another Beef Empire Days Cattle Crawl. The successful 2005 event was a quick sellout with 70 diners enjoying the gourmet-like entrees at several of Garden City's most popular dining establishments. Past participants, new attendees and wine connoisseurs will not want to miss the 2006 version of the event, scheduled for June 11, at 4:30 p.m. The event is modeled after the highly successful Kansas City and Wichita events hosted by the Kansas and Missouri Beef Councils. Participants will be ferried by motor coach to five locations for samplings of beef, wine, desserts and art during the event that is sponsored by Kennedy and Coe, LLC and realtors Martin and Judy Nusser of Garden City. The final stop is at Garden City's ArtsCenter on Main for dessert and a viewing of the art work of Leoti, Kan., artists Charlie and Pat Norton; Dodge City's Norma Clare; and Beth Braid of Van Horn, Texas.

Beth Braid last exhibited at the 2002 Beef Empire Days Professional Western Art Show where her exciting and functional pottery was met with resounding success. Each of her pieces is utilitarian, but is also handmade, uniquely designed and suitable for decoration as well as function. The works are hand-thrown on a potter's wheel using stoneware clay. The clay is very sturdy and has a weighty feel to it. The pieces then are fired twice, for bisque and glaze. The glazes are lead and barium-free, so all pieces are food-safe and can be put into the microwave, conventional oven and dishwasher.

Dodge City resident Norma Clare offers Native American and Western themed works. She has the ability to work in numerous mediums on a variety of surfaces and claims to have painted on just about anything "that will hold still." Clare makes it a point to stay involved with the Western heritage of Dodge City, the Southwest and the original inhabitants of our national grasslands, the Native American, remembering the west so others can, too.

Charlie and Pat Norton have been sculpting and painting for more than 30 years. They both enjoy pleinaire painting and Charlie is also famous for his bronzes, while Pat is a potter and painter. Their art work takes them to many places as most of the work entails history. The Nortons recently completed the larger-than-life-size sculpture of Buffalo Bill on his horse shooting a buffalo that is located on U.S. Highway 83, south of Interstate 70 in Oakley, Kan.

Tickets for this event are available in limited quantity for $65 each and will include a complimentary beef-related gift. Phone the Beef Empire Days office at 620-275-6807 for additional information or to purchase tickets.
